Who invented chess?

Chess does not have one inventor. Their ancestor is considered to be chaturanga - a game originated in India around the 6th century AD, which reached Europe through Persia and the Arab world, where it took on its present form in the 15th century.

In short: India (Chaturanga, around the 6th century) → Persia (Chatrang) → the Arab world (Chatrang) → Europe (around the 10th century) → a great reform of the rules in the 15th century, after which the hetman became the strongest figure. "Shah mat" itself comes from the Persian "shah mat" - "the king is helpless".

Najstarszym powszechnie uznawanym przodkiem szachów jest czaturanga, znana z Indii z czasów imperium Guptów, około VI wieku n.e. Nazwa oznacza „cztery rodzaje wojsk" — piechotę, jazdę, słonie i rydwany, które odpowiadały dzisiejszym pionom, skoczkom, gońcom i wieżom. Persia and the Arab world: where did "checkmate" come from

From India, the game came to Persia, where it was called chatrang. This is where the most famous chess expression comes from: "shah mate", meaning "the king is helpless" - today's "check mate". After the conquest of Persia, the game was taken over by the Arab world as shatrand, and it was Arab masters who were the first to write down chess tasks and analyzes - the oldest preserved compositions are over a thousand years old.

Europe and the great reform of the 15th century

Chess came to Europe around the 10th century, mainly through Arab Spain and the Mediterranean trade routes. The real revolution came at the end of the 15th century on the Iberian Peninsula and in Italy: the queen - previously a weak piece, moving one square - gained today's powerful range, and the bishop began to cross the entire diagonal. The game has rapidly accelerated and it is from this reform that we play chess as we know it today.

Interesting fact: why do we say "hetman" in Polish and not "queen"?

In many languages, the strongest figure is the "queen" (dame). Polish tradition calls her hetman - from the old Polish title of the supreme commander of troops. The name "queen" is sometimes used colloquially, but in Polish chess literature and in tournaments the name "queen" is used.

Modern chess: from cafés to federations

The first international tournament was played in London in 1851, and Wilhelm Steinitz is considered the first official world champion after the 1886 match. The International Chess Federation FIDE was established in 1924 in Paris and to this day organizes world championships and chess Olympiads.

The legend of grains on a chessboard

The most famous story about the origins of chess is the legend of a sage who asked the ruler for a "modest" payment for inventing the game: one grain of wheat on the first square of the chess board, two on the second, four on the third - and so on, doubling on each of the 64 squares. The ruler agreed, without counting - and the total exceeds 18 trillion grains, more than the world has produced for centuries. The legend doesn't tell the truth about the game's origins, but it has taught one of the most important concepts in mathematics for centuries: exponential growth.
