Caro-Kann Defense: the bishop that refuses to be trapped

The Caro-Kann Defense starts with 1.e4 c6 and solves the problem that plagues the French Defense: the c8-bishop gets out to f5 or g4 BEFORE playing e6, so it never ends up trapped behind your own pawns. In exchange, you play one move slower than in the Scandinavian, but you get a very solid structure that's hard to break down.

In short: after 1.e4 c6 you prepare d5 without shutting in the c8-bishop. Whichever variation White chooses — Classical, Advance, or Exchange — Black's plan stays the same: bishop to f5, e6, Nf6, Nbd7, Be7, and short castling. You can practice the full repertoire in the opening trainer, free and without an account.

Starting position and the idea

After 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5, White most often plays 3.Nc3 (Classical Variation), defending the e4 pawn with the knight. After 3...dxe4 4.Nxe4 you bring the bishop out to f5 — that exact move is the heart of the Caro-Kann's advantage over the French. The knight attacks the bishop (5.Ng3), but it retreats actively to g6, losing no development time. Next comes e6, Nf6, Nbd7, Be7, and short castling.

Honestly, about this page's scope

The above is a sketch of the plan, not a full trainer with every branch. The full Caro-Kann Defense repertoire — with an exact evaluation of every line verified by the Stockfish engine — is waiting in the opening trainer inside the app. Before playing your first opening, it's also worth knowing the 5 rules that win most games — the Caro-Kann is just one way of putting those rules into practice.

More openings (including the Italian Game, French Defense, and Queen's Gambit) are covered on the Chess Openings page. Want to practice these same principles right away against an opponent? Play a game against the computer at any difficulty level.
