Pirc Defense: one plan against White's three replies

The Pirc Defense starts with 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 — instead of fighting for the center right away, you let White build it, then attack it with a fianchettoed bishop on g7. It's a flexible, modern defense for Black: there's little theory to memorize, because the same development scheme works no matter how White plays.

In short: after 3...g6 you play Bg7 and short castle regardless of whether White chooses the calm Classical Variation (4.Nf3), the sharper Austrian Attack (4.f4), or the symmetrical fianchetto (4.g3). One universal plan against three different White setups — the other replies each have their own follow-up below. You can practice the full repertoire — with branches for every reasonable White reply — in the opening trainer, free and without an account.

Starting position and the idea

After 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3, Black doesn't rush to fight for the center, instead preparing pressure on it with a fianchettoed bishop from g7 and a later ...e5 or ...c5, via 3...g6. Black's follow-up plan — always Bg7 and short castling — stays the same no matter how White sets up: calmly, aggressively, or flexibly. It's an opening built around one universal scheme: no need to memorize separate theory for every reply, just understand why the bishop goes to g7.

Honestly, about this page's scope

The above is a sketch of the plan, not a full trainer with every branch and typical opponent mistakes. The full Pirc Defense repertoire — with an exact evaluation of every line verified by the Stockfish engine — is waiting in the opening trainer inside the app. Before playing your first opening, it's also worth knowing the 5 rules that win most games — the Pirc Defense is just one way of putting those rules into practice, this time with the black pieces.

More openings (including the Italian Game, Sicilian Defense, and Queen's Gambit) are covered on the Chess Openings page. Want to practice these same principles right away against an opponent? Play a game against the computer at any difficulty level.
