The pawn in chess: it captures differently than it moves

The pawn is the only piece in chess that captures differently than it moves: it goes straight forward one square, but captures diagonally — and it never moves back, not even one step.

In short: a pawn moves one square forward, or two from its starting square. It captures only diagonally, one square. It may never move backward. On reaching the last rank it turns into any piece — almost always a queen. It is the weakest piece, but through promotion it can decide the game.

How the pawn moves

A pawn goes straight forward one square. There is a single exception: from its starting square — the second rank for White, the seventh for Black — its first move may be two squares. It cannot move sideways or backward, and if any piece stands in its path it is blocked and does not move at all.

How the pawn captures

Capturing is the only time a pawn goes diagonally: it takes a piece one square diagonally ahead, to the left or the right. A pawn does not capture straight ahead — a piece directly in front is safe, it blocks the pawn but will not be taken. This is the most common beginner mix-up.

Promotion: the pawn becomes a queen

When a pawn reaches the last rank it immediately turns into a chosen piece: queen, rook, bishop or knight. It cannot become a king or another pawn. Almost always a queen is chosen, the strongest piece — but sometimes choosing a knight or a rook avoids stalemate and wins.

The pawn has one more special capture, en passant, which takes an enemy pawn that has just passed it by two squares. We cover it on a separate page about en passant.

Does a pawn capture backward?

No. A pawn captures only diagonally forward, never toward its own side.

Is capturing with a pawn compulsory?

No, in chess no capture is compulsory — you always have a choice.

Can a pawn become a king?

No. On promotion you choose a queen, rook, bishop or knight — never a king or another pawn.
