The rook in chess: the power of open files
A rook moves straight — along ranks and files — any number of free squares, and though at the start of the game it sits trapped in the corner, in the endgame it becomes one of the most dangerous pieces.
In short: a rook moves in straight lines: ranks and files, any distance. It is worth 5 points, more than a bishop or knight. At the start it is shut in the corner and comes into play last — usually through castling. Its strength grows as files open and when it reaches the opponent's seventh rank.
How the rook moves
The rook moves along ranks and files any number of free squares. It does not go diagonally and does not jump — the first piece in its way stops it, or is captured. On an empty board a rook controls fourteen squares, wherever it stands.
The rook needs open files
A rook's whole strength depends on open files and ranks. A rook shut in by its own pawns, as in the second board position, has no move at all. That is why at the start it is the weakest of the line pieces — it waits for the files to open.
Castling brings the rook into play
Because the rook starts in the corner, the fastest way to activate it is castling — the king hides behind pawns and the rook comes closer to the centre. We cover it on the page about castling.
The rook in the endgame
In the endgame, as the board thins out, the rook flourishes: it seizes open files and the opponent's seventh rank, attacking pawns and cutting off the king. Two rooks behind a passed pawn are one of the commonest winning endgame themes.
How does the rook move?
Straight, along ranks and files, any number of free squares.
Rook or bishop — which is stronger?
The rook, worth 5 against 3 for a bishop.
Why is the rook weak at the start?
Because it sits in the corner behind its own pawns — it comes alive only once the files open.
The rook is one of six pieces — see them together in the guide to chess pieces, and join the rook with the bishop in the queen.
